HOW TO PREPARE A RESUME

What is a Resume?  A brief account of one's work experience and qualifications, often submitted with a job application.

The economy has changed the way the employers view our resumes in part due to the change in the work market and their specific needs.  Resumes must be adjusted to fit the needs of the employers.  Therefore your resume must be brief, precise and factual.

Keep in mind, that most companies have highly-skilled managers who are trained to scan your resume for errors and deception.

Here are a few pointers to help you get the interview.

  • Cover Letter.  A resume should always be accompanied with a short, but precise cover letter.  Make sure that you indicate position that you are applying for and where it was advertised.
  • Visually Too Busy.  If your resume is wall-to-wall text featuring five different fonts, you will give the employer a headache.  Show your resume to several people before sending it out.  If they find it too busy, revise. Select a format that is easy on the interviewer’s eyes.
  • Typos and Grammatical Errors.  Your resume needs to be grammatically perfect. If it isn't, employers will read between the lines and draw a not-so-flattering conclusions about you.
  • Eliminate excessive words by describing your last/present position in minimal terms.
  • NEVER make your resume personal by using such words as "I and me".
  • OMIT "References Available Upon Request and Your Objective.  The age-old "references available upon request" has become archaic.  You should have solid references lined up from the start, so when the hiring manager asks for them, you're ready to share them.
  • Attempting One Size Fits All.  Whenever you develop a one-size-fits all resume to send to all employers, you almost always end up with something employers will toss in the recycle bin.  Employers want you to write a resume specifically for them. They expect you to clearly show how and why you fit the position in a specific organization.
  • NEVER place your picture or any photos of any kind on your resume.  The resume is for qualifications and experiences only.  The interview will be your personal introduction.
  • Last but not least, make sure that you provide correct contact information. If the interviewer cannot locate an employer, they will not make any additional efforts to do so.
